CGB-GEB. John MOLBY, b. Apr. 14, 1817 (Chester 5, Jonathan 4, Sam.3, Sam.2, Wm.1). He was born in the town of Camillus, now Van Buren. m. July 22, 1837, Clarissa E. HOLCOMB, dau. of Edmond and Sally --- Holcomb; she was b. Sept. 27, 1818, Onondaga Co., N.Y.

John Maltby (sic) was a farmer. His farm was on Lot No. 19, on the East Dead Creek road in the town of Van Buren. This was the farm next south to the Harvey Walker farm. Harvey's daughter, Erma Walker Kraft, is the present owner of the John Maltby property.

The southern end of the East Dead Creek road has been cut off and is now part of the truck route 31. This leaves the old Dead Creek road a very short one. John Molby's old farm and Harvey Walker's farm are now on Route 31, in the town of Van Buren.

"Information from 1850, 1855, 1865 Van Buren Census. Records in the possession of Fred A Molby, Baldwin, Kansas.

"In a letter dated Aug. 31, 1953, he says--'John Molby's son, Frank H. Molby of Ashgrove Farm, Greenleaf, Kansas, sent me a list in which he gave his father John's birth as Feb. 19, 1817."

"In a Bible which John's widow had procured several years after John's death, all nicely written, she had--

"John Molby was born April 14, 1817.
John Molby died February 6, 1859, Onondaga Co., N.Y.,
age 41-9-22." (probably Van Buren Twp.)
(In the copy sent me it is: "John Molby was born April 1, 1817).

It is thought that John died on his farm and is buried in the old cemetery on the Molby-Rouse farm, now leveled. Most of the bodies were removed to nearby cemeteries. After his death his family re- mained in this section for a number of years, but finally all went west, the last one in 1884. (Ref. Harvey Walker).

(Note. One of Irvin John Molby's children was born in New York in 1887; and the next child was born in Kansas, 1889).

Death of Mrs. Molby. (Item from Baldwinsville, N.Y. Gazette, 9/30/1897)

Mrs. Clarissa E. Molby was born in the state of New York, Sep- tember 27, 1818, and died in Creston at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday September 8, 1897, at the residence of her son, E. J. Molby on Summer avenue, after an illness of one month. The funeral services were held at the residence of I.J. (sic) Molby Wednesday afternoon, Rev. C. W. Riches, pastor of the Baptist church, officiating. The remains were taken on No. 30 to Kansas to be interred in the Barnes city cemetery, which is situated on the farm of C. D. Molby. The deceased for more than thirty-five years was a devoted Christian, a member of the Baptist church. She was possessed of an exceedingly sunny temperament and endeared herself to the hearts of all who knew her. During her illness she was a most patient sufferer, concerned more for the trouble she feared she was causing others than for her own sufferings. Until the intense heat of the past week began to affect her, her friends believed she was to recover, but on Friday last she began to fail. Her husband proceeded her to the better land thirty-eight years ago. She leaves three sons and two daughters who with their families most deeply mourn the departure of one whom everyone loved. Of her it can be truly said, "Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord." Our loss is heaven's gain. Another light in the windows above. Addi- tional beautiful hands beckoning to the other shore the waiting ones here. (Creston, Iowa, Gazette).

Mrs. Molby will be remembered by many of our readers, as she was long a resident of Van Buren."

1868-9. Directory, Van Buren, Onondaga County.

"Maltby, Mrs. Clarissa E. (sic) (Memphis P.O.) Lot 19, farmer, 44 acres." Miss L. E. Voorhees of Baldwinsville, writes: "I do not understand why she was reported in the 2nd Election district in 1855 and in the 1st Election District in the 1865 census, unless she moved after the death of her husband."

From a Bible in possession of Mrs. Hans Jorgenson, Helen Molby, dau. of Franklin H. Molby and Ida Ingoldsby Molby.

The Bible is large quarto size, 3/4 leather bound, in good condition, well written records in ink only a little faded, but fading. It is prefaced by Roswell D. Hitchcock, Union Theological Seminary, June 15, 1869.

Marriage date for Edmund and Sally Holcomb is not given. (Note. New York State Census, 1855, listed them as father and mother, living in the home of John and Clarissa Molby). Clarissa E. Molby died Sept. 8, 1897 at Creston, Iowa.

(Grave Maplewood Cem., Barnes, Kansas). (No more deaths of this family had been recorded in this Bible). Maplewood Cemetery is on the farm homesteaded by C. D. Molby.

The following records were taken by F. A. Molby, 9-17-1952, from Maplewood Cemetery gravestone inscriptions.

Clinton D. Molby March 28, 1906 (at home near Barnes)
Harriet A. (his wife) died Nov. 11, 1909.
      1st child, dates illegible
      Bertha D. child of C. D. and H. A. Molby, died young.
Asahel Earll died Nov. 13, 1902.
Alvira J. his wife, died Sept. 4, 1904.
      (a child of above, d. 9-18-1881, ae. 3-0-17.
a dau. of above, Emma Earll Petty, date illegible).
William H. Barlow died 1924 (in August or September).
Emily M., his wife, died 1917 (in August).
Franklin H. Molby died Dec. 20, 1926 (Dec. 20, supplied by dau.
                                            Helen).
Ida J., his wife, died May 12, 1930. (recorded in the Bible).
Irvin John Molby, died June 24, 1934 (from dau. Mrs. John Miller).
Malden Meigs died June 15, 1914 (from Miss L. E. Voorhees).
Almira J. Meigs died Feb. 27, 1891 (from niece, Mrs. John Miller).

From the data contained in these notes, it is evident that Clarissa Holcomb was dau. of Edmund Holcomb, b. Southwick, Mass., July 28, 1780, and his wife, Sally Cordell, b. in Weston, Conn., Oct. 20, 1783, who is evidently a dau. of John Cordell, b.1758.

It is thought that John Maltby died on his farm and is buried in the old cemetery on the Molby-Rouse farm, now leveled. Most of the bodies were removed to nearby cemeteries.

After John's death his family remained in this section for a number of years, but finally all went west--the last one in ca. 1888.
